Technique

  • Identify fluid/insertion site
  • Prep and drape
  • Anaesthetise skin/subcutaneous tissue/pleura with 1% or 2% lignocaine
  • Use larger needle to identify depth to pleural cavity, stopping insertion when air/effusion comes back, then remove syringe
  • Thread guidewire and remove needle
  • Cut skin
  • Dilator (limit insertion to the actual distance to pleura)
  • Thread drain tube over guidewire and remove guidewire
  • Suture the drain in place, with usual dressing
  • Attach to UWSD
