Pancreatic endocrine insufficiency
Appearance
Pathophysiology
[edit | edit source]- Destruction or removal of 85% of islet cell mass is necessary before endocrine insufficiency becomes clinically apparent in the form of diabetes
- 20-50% of patients will develop it after pancreatic resection, but hard to predict who
- Total pancreatectomy unquestionably leads to brittle diabetes, due to the lack of glucagon to balance exogenous insulin
