Pancreatic endocrine insufficiency

From Surgopaedia

Pathophysiology

[edit | edit source]
  • Destruction or removal of 85% of islet cell mass is necessary before endocrine insufficiency becomes clinically apparent in the form of diabetes
  • 20-50% of patients will develop it after pancreatic resection, but hard to predict who
  • Total pancreatectomy unquestionably leads to brittle diabetes, due to the lack of glucagon to balance exogenous insulin
