Orchitis

Aetiology

• Mumps
  • Develops in 20-30% of post-pubertal patients with mumps
  • Usually develops as the parotid swelling is waning
  • Diagnose with IgM antibodies in seum
  • Main complication - testicular atrophy - can cause infertility if bilateral
  • Persistent testicular pain can occur
• Syphilis
  • Now uncommon
  • Can cause bilateral orchitis
  • Can be associated with congenital syphilis
  • Can lead to interstitial fibrosis (painless destruction of testis) or gumma of the testis (unilateral slowly growing painless swelling)
  • Diagnosis confirmed with serology
