Risk factors:

  • Longer surgery
  • General anaesthetic
  • Excessively high pressure to individual body area (>32mmHg)
  • Cool environment (vasoconstriction)
  • Ischaemia during surgery

Strategies to avoid

  • Relief of pressure on pressure points - gel pads
  • Keep skin dry
  • Avoid leaning on, or placing items on, the patient
