Hydatid drainage
[edit | edit source]- Four weeks of albendazole prior
- Have available a scolicidal agent to wash out the cyst and kill remaining scolices - absolute alcohol
- Sterile black towels to pack off the surrounding tissues
- Warn anaesthetist of risk of anaphylaxis
- Gently separate the cyst from its fibrinous adhesions to surrounding tissues so you have access
- Aspirate the cyst, then inject 20% hypertonic saline, leave it for 20 minutes, then aspirate again
- Can use 'Aarons' cone' to protect from spillage
- Deroof the cavity (some surgeons advocate for complete removal but this is harder)
