Hydatid drainage

[edit | edit source]
  • Four weeks of albendazole prior
  • Have available a scolicidal agent to wash out the cyst and kill remaining scolices - absolute alcohol
  • Sterile black towels to pack off the surrounding tissues
  • Warn anaesthetist of risk of anaphylaxis
  • Gently separate the cyst from its fibrinous adhesions to surrounding tissues so you have access
  • Aspirate the cyst, then inject 20% hypertonic saline, leave it for 20 minutes, then aspirate again
    • Can use 'Aarons' cone' to protect from spillage
  • Deroof the cavity (some surgeons advocate for complete removal but this is harder)
