  • Visible haematuria - 20% cancer
  • Non-visible haematuria - <5% cancer
  • Investigation is designed to exclude cancer
  • Consider trauma, infection and neoplasm at all levels of the urinary tract


History

  • Timing of the blood
    • Initial - urethral pathology
    • Throughout - bladder or upper tracts
    • Terminal - bladder neck or prostate


Aetiology

  • Trauma
  • Infection
  • Neoplasm


Investigation

  • Renal ultrasound
  • Flexible cystoscopy
  • Urine MCS
