FFP transfusion

Indications

  • Deficiency of clotting factors with bleeding or risk of bleeding, where specific therapy (e.g. clotting factor concentrates) is not appropriate or available
    • Useful when the specific clotting deficiency can't be treated with the exact product
  • Prevention of dilutional coagulopathy in the setting of MTP
  • DIC
  • Plasma exchange (TTP)
  • Reversal of warfarin anticoagulation

Component

  • FFP - whole blood or apheresis unit - 275mL
  • Paed unit - 70mL

Administration

  • Adults, paeds and neonates: 10-15mL/kg, rounded to nearest unit (in most cases give 15mL/kg)
  • Give over 30-120 mins based on volume tolerance

Outcomes

  • INR changes may not correlate with clinical effect
  • The effect can be transient
