Risk factors for sedation (should be intubated)

  • Difficult to sedate
  • Heavy drinkers
  • ASA III-IV
  • Airway concerns
  • Risk of aspiration
  • Long/complex procedure

Monitoring

  • HR, BP, oxygen at a minimum
  • ECG for longer procedures or higher-risk patients

Levels of sedation

  • Moderate sedation (a.k.a. conscious sedation)
    • Self-ventilate
    • Maintain own airway
    • Respond to light physical stimuli and verbal commands
    • Unpleasant procedures tolerable


Maximum without anaesthetist - 5mg midazolam and 100mcg fentanyl
