Bowel prep
Appearance
From Austin protocol 2022:
[edit | edit source]- Low-fibre diet for three days prior
- Change to clear fluids at 1pm the day before
Preparations
[edit | edit source]Osmotically balanced
[edit | edit source]- PEG (polyethylene glycol)
- Safer than osmotic laxatives for patients with renal/liver insufficiency/CHF or electrolyte imbalances
Hyperosmotic preparations
[edit | edit source]- Higher risk of electrolyte imbalances
- PicoLAX (NaP + magnesium citrate)
- Fleet (aqueous NaP)
Others
[edit | edit source]- Bisacodyl - stimulates peristalsis
- Use as adjunct for NaP or PEG preparations (decreases volume required)
