Appearance
Technique
- Identify fluid/insertion site
- Prep and drape
- Anaesthetise skin/subcutaneous tissue/pleura with 1% or 2% lignocaine
- Use larger needle to identify depth to pleural cavity, stopping insertion when air/effusion comes back, then remove syringe
- Thread guidewire and remove needle
- Cut skin
- Dilator (limit insertion to the actual distance to pleura)
- Thread drain tube over guidewire and remove guidewire
- Suture the drain in place, with usual dressing
- Attach to UWSD
