Types of transplant

  • Isografts - organ from genetically identical twin
  • Allograft - organ from genetically dissimilar individual
  • Xenograft - organ from another species

Preparation of living donors for transplant:

  • Assess current function and anatomy of organ in question
    • E.g. for kidney, look at eGFR, vasculature
  • Assess risk to donor of donation
  • Ensure no risk of transmitting pathology to recipient
    • Malignancy
    • Infections
  • Check immune compatibility
  • Psychological assessment and motivation
  • Give informed consent

Methods of improving graft survival

  • Matching HLA class I and II antigens (but not done for livers)
  • Risk factors of recipient
  • Recipient immune suppression
