Prolapse - urethrocoele

  • Occurs in conjunction with cystocoele
  • Largely due to childbirth

Stricture

  • Uncommon in women
  • Urethritis
  • Difficult labour
  • Respond well to urethral dilation in women

Fowler's syndrome

  • Idiopathic condition with abnormal myotonic discharge in the striated urethral sphincter
  • Causes retention
  • Probably have to do ISC

Diverticulum

  • Rare
  • Local pain and repeated cystitis due to infection
  • Purulent urine discharged if the urethra is compressed with a finger in the vagina
  • MRI or TV USS
  • Can be excised carefully

Caruncle

  • Common in elderly women
  • Soft, raspberry-like, pedunculated granulomatous mass, about the size of a pea, attached to the posterior urethral wall near the external meatus
  • There may be frequency of micturition and urethral pain afterwards
  • Can be excised and diathermy the base of the stalk

Carcinoma of the urethra

  • Often a/w caruncles
  • Malignant swellings of the urethra feel harder than benign ones
