Effects

  • Lower plasma triglycerides
    • Reduced hepatic synthesis of VLDL
  • Reduce resting HR and BP - could be from direct effects of cardiac eletrophysiological pathways
  • Anti-thrombotic - this is more in vitro than in vivo
  • Improved flow-mediated arterial dilation
  • Cardiac filling and myocardial efficiency
  • Insulin resistance improvement - not consistently seen in observational studies though

Outcomes

  • Consumption of fish or fish oil probably significantly reduces CV mortality
    • Not all studies have shown this though
  • May improve non-fatal coronary events, ischaemic stroke, recurrent ventricular arrhythmias, AF, heart failure
